School Participation Needed for CA Coastal Cleanup Day
Teachers
With litter being a major source of marine debris, registering your school or classroom for Coastal Cleanup Day (CCD) is an ideal way to teach young people about the problem of litter in their local environment.
If you can’t participate on Saturday, the official day of CCD, participate during the month of September by having a cleanup at your school. Getting involved in a cleanup gives young people the opportunity to become part of their local community. Not only will they be making a positive contribution to their local area, but they will also learn at the same time.
This year, San Mateo Countywide Water Pollution Prevention Program is encouraging teachers to conduct a school area cleanup during the month of September. We will provide all the supplies you need and count your students among the thousands that participate in this cleanup worldwide.
You can help your students make the connection between the trash they remove and the trash in our oceans by using the CA Coastal Commission activities. Download a free PDF curriculum of the "Community Action" chapter, containing lessons on Coastal Cleanup Day and other related service-learning projects.
If your school or classroom is interested in participating in a cleanup at your school in September (the month of CCD), please contact Ana Clayton at pollutionprevention@co.sanmateo.ca.us or 650-372-6214 for more information. A package will be sent to you with collection bags, gloves, and data cards.
