Recycling Fluorescent Light Bulbs

Fluorescent lights save electricity; so they are a good choice for energy conservation. However,
they do contain a very small amount of mercury sealed within the glass tubing, which can not go into the trash.

Curbside Collection

Currently, only Allied Waste of Daly City and GreenWaste allow residents to place bulbs in a bag on their recycling bins for pickup.

At Your Door Service

If you live in Belmont, Burlingame, Foster City, East Palo Alto, Hillsborough, Menlo Park, San Carlos, San Mateo, or a variety of neighborhoods in the unincorporated areas of the County, you can call 1-800-HHW-PKUP to arrange for pickup of the whole range of household hazardous waste, at your doorstep.
For more details, visit Rethink Waste

Drop Where You Shop

Some businesses that sell compact fluorescent bulbs or tubes will take used-up ones back from their customers. Since this service is voluntary, participating stores do change. Currently, these include all Home Depot, OSH and IKEA stores, as well as some independent hardware stores.

To check for locations near you, visit www.Recycleworks.org and use the Recycling Search function at the bottom left of their homepage. (It doesn’t hurt to call the business and double-check, as well.)

Use the County’s Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Program

Have you cleaned out your house and gotten a load of HHW ready? Don’t live in an At Your Door city (see above)?  Make an appointment online, and drop off your fluorescent lights along with everything else.
