What are the top 4 debris items found in San Mateo County?
Thousands Participate for the 25th Anniversary of Coastal Cleanup Day
The 25th Annual Coastal Cleanup Day marked the largest community wide cleanup effort in San Mateo County to date. This year 4,224 volunteers scoured beaches, creeks, parks, and neighborhoods from 9 a.m. to noon throughout the county. Families, local businesses, faith-based organizations, schools, and individual residents removed 38,518 pounds of trash and 5,790.5 pounds of recyclables from our local beaches, creeks, the bay and neighborhoods.
Year after year participation continues to grow significantly. This year we added neighborhood cleanups in an effort to take litter reduction to the streets all year round. Litter that is dropped in the street in our urban area is often washed into the storm drain system and ends up on our beaches, in our creeks, and the Bay. Coastal Cleanup Day is a one day event that helps make a difference; however everyday counts and we can all take steps everyday to reduce marine pollution. Remember, put trash in its proper place all year round!

FACTS ABOUT MARINE DEBRIS & HOW YOU CAN HELP
Thank you to all our site captains and our volunteers!!! Thank you for joining the effort to protect our beautiful coastlines by helping to remove litter from our beaches, creeks, shorelines, parks and neighborhoods thereby reducing the harmful impacts caused by both litter and urban runoff, and restoring the natural beauty of our watersheds.

Coastal Cleanup Day (CCD) began in 1985 and has grown into a huge annual event. This one-day cleanup is international—at last count, over 60 nations participated—and may be the largest volunteer day on the planet.

Next cleanup is scheduled for September 25,2010 |

Each year, San Mateo Countywide Water Pollution Prevention Program (SMCWPPP) and the California Coastal Commission partner to coordinate Coastal Cleanup Day in San Mateo County in an effort to engage people to remove debris from the bay and inland waterways; identify the sources of debris; and ultimately change the behaviors that cause pollution. Last year over 3,802 volunteers helped cleanup over 30 sites along the Bay and inland creeks and waterways. This year's event was our biggest yet- thanks primarily to our amazing site captains and our volunteers.
Coastal Cleanup Day involves individuals, schools, community and company volunteer groups. Volunteers collect thousands of pounds of trash and recyclables during a three-hour period. By filling out the trash "data cards" during the cleanup, volunteers are helping to identify and stop polluters in the future.
The 26th Annual Coastal Cleanup Day will be held on Saturday September 25,2010.
