Pharmaceutical Disposal Program
Recent research by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) shows trace amounts of pharmaceuticals in many of the Country’s waterways. Much of this is due to the disposal of unused pharmaceuticals into the sanitary sewer system which eventually leads to our waterways such as streams, creeks, rivers, reservoirs, bays and beyond.
One thing you can do to help is to properly dispose of your unused pharmaceuticals, over the counter medications and vitamins. In San Mateo County, you can dispose of this waste at law enforcement agencies listed below.

Don't Flush Your Old Medications!

Disposal Procedures:
- Remove excess packaging like boxes and bottles.
- Consolidate pills in ziplock bag or tied off bag.
