Volunteer Outdoors in East Palo Alto at Cooley Landing

March 30 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Join us at Cooley Landing for a morning of habitat restoration, no prior experience required! The plan of the day is to weed in the restoration sites and sheet mulch next year’s planting area to help with weed suppression. In order to sheet mulch, we need a large quantity of cardboard to cover the area.

If you have large pieces of cardboard (anything bigger than 2x2ft, with minimal printing and with no glossy coating), please bring it with you on Saturday. We will be removing tape and staples from the cardboard during the workday but if possible remove them from any cardboard you bring, it would be great help!

Our time together will end with a guided plant walk and a short breathing exercise to help ground us to this space. Volunteers can expect to do work that includes having their backs bent over for long periods while using gardening tools, moving cardboard, shoveling and moving buckets of mulch on flat terrain.

Visit Grassroots Ecology’s Cooley Landing page to learn more about the ecosystem and accessibility considerations.

Waivers/Registration: All volunteers attending the workday must be registered individually and have approved the online waiver through this Eventbrite page. Youth under 18 must have their legal guardian approve the waiver on their behalf. Volunteers age 12 and under require an accompanying adult.

Parking: There are two small parking lots available at Cooley Landing. There is a parking lot at the end of Bay Road near the Education Center, and a smaller parking lot near Ravenswood Preserve. No entrance or parking fees are required.

Bus: Take the 296 going North to Bay/Pulgas or the 280 going East to Bay/Pulgas. From the bus stop, it’s a half mile walk down Bay Road to Cooley Landing.

Bike: There is a bike rack located across the Cooley Landing parking lot.

Meeting Space: We will meet at the Cooley Landing Education Center. Bathrooms, cell service, wifi, and water fountains are all accessible.
